This effectively relegates VT (and many other teams) to the 2nd division


Of college football. There are a few schools with massive resources (Bama, Ohio State, etc) who are simply going to dominate under this scheme, sweep up all top recruits yearly, and maintain a stranglehold on the few available playoff spots.

Teams like Tech, along with the majority of the other Division 1 schools, will have to content themselves with playing out their conference schedules, hoping for an occasional conference title and playing in non-playoff bowl games. Realistically, that's now the ceiling for Tech and the vast majority of FBS teams.
